Linda Lederman and Lea Stewart, in their book, Changing the Culture of College Drinking: A Socially Situated Health Communication Campaign, present a case study of a 20-year effort to change the culture of college drinking at Rutgers University. The book serves as a how-to guide for designing, implementing, and evaluating campaigns on college campuses, with implications for other populations and contexts. This case comprises an exceptional model for the ways in which service learning and action research can be integrated into college health campaigns. More importantly, it illustrates the ways in which research, theory, teaching, and service have been conceptualized and treated as an overlapping endeavor, and it exemplifies what applied communication scholarship should best represent (Ruben, 2005).
