This article provides a comprehensive overview of the production methods, properties, and uses of nonwoven fabrics. The discussion includes a brief introduction, short history, and compilation of definitions of a nonwoven fabric. The processes used to manufacture nonwovens are grouped into four categories according to parent technology: textile, paper, extrusion, and hybrid, and into four sequences of operation: fiber selection, web formation, bonding, and finishing. Descriptions and illustrations of the manufacturing sequences follow. Production trends and product applications are discussed.
