REYHAN, in an interesting article in 19.95, presented certain facts about the courses of sclaizophrenic reactions in patients hospitalized in 1920 and in 1940. The patients he studied were 100 consecutive schizophrenic admissions to the Delaware State Hospital subsequent to January 1, 1920, and a similarly selected sample subsequent to January 1, 19.40. No attempt was made to distinguish between diagnostic sub-types. In addition to information about the hospital adjustment of these patients, number of their readmissions, characteristics of onset of illness, and types of therapy attempted, certain data were presented about duration and extent of hospitalization. The data concerning release potential were outlined using cross-sectional technics. In other words, the hospital status of each patient was ascertained at a point thirteen years after~ he admission year for each of the two samples. These comparisons showed that thirteen years after hospital admission 65 per cent of the 1920 group and 42 per cent of the 1940 group were in the hospital; and 11 per cent of the 1920 group and 4 per cent of the 1940 group had died.~ AZhen both groups were examined as to their status in 1953, the 1920 group had 44 per cent of its members in the hospital, and the 1940 group had 42 per cent. The present paper proposes to follow the release patterns of all persons committed to any mental hospital of the California Department of Mental Hygiene with the diagnosis of schizophrenic reaction during the fiscal years 1949 to 1957. This will be clone by means of a cohort£ ollow-up analysis" technic similar to that described by Kramer, 2 Pollack,~ and Israel and Johnson. For the purpose of examining groups of patients, the traditional cross-sectional technic ably presents such information as the numbers of admissions, discharges and deaths occurring during any calendar period. The technics of cohort analysis, in addition to supplying this information= enable one to present measures of the likelihood of release as well as to present estimates of net length of hospitalization during any period measured from date of admission. The term cohort is generally used to designate any group with one or more characteristics in common. In this paper it refers to the males or females admitted for the first time to a state mental hospital in California in a given fiscal year from 1949 to 1957. The male and female patients are being presented separately in order to clarify questions which have arisen about possible sex differences in the length of hospitalization of schizophrenic patients. Only Caucasian patients are included in order to increase the homogeneity of the cohorts. The age range, 25-44 years at admission, was chosen to limit complicating involutional factors as well as those of childhood schizoplarenia. These groups of patients, to be sure, are not comparable to either Freyhan's or Bleuler's. series in view of the fact that in the present series an age range of~ 5-44 is specified, the fact that the group is restricted to Caucasians, and
