was given to ulcer patients there was little difference in pH, but the free acid was somewhathigher than when water alone was given. When a fat emulsion was given with tea as comparedwith water, there was no significant difference in the pH, free acid and pepsin. When peptone or carbohydratewas given there was an increasedrate of emptying of the stomachwith tea as comparedwith water. When protein, fat and carbohydratewere given tea caused an increased rate of emptying. Fluoroscopic tests gave similar resultsand so too did studieswith the intragastric balloon. From theseand other data it appearsthat tea as customarily prepared with sugar and taken in average amountsof two cups is not a potent gastric secretagogue in the fasting state and in the post-cibal state. Iced tea leaves the stomach quicker than hot tea. Since tea increasesgastric tone and the rate of gastric emptying, it would appearthat the postprandialrelief which tea often gives after a heavy meal is brought about by its effect on the gastricmusculature. It is felt by the authorsthat their observationsjustify the long-held belief that a cup or two of tea with meals has value in aiding digestion. There is, as yet, no evidencethat the caffeine or tannin of the tea has any specific effect in this regard, for caffeine has no action on the gastro-intestinaltract of man and little is known about the tannin. Tea then, takenas a beveragein averageamounts, need not be contraindicatedin the treatment of most gastro-intestinalconditions.
