GENICULATE W-, X-, AND Y-CELLS 583 the apparently less efficient synaptic transmission through these neurons. Finally, X-cell arbors, which extend along “projection lines,” are suited for maximum convergence of synaptic inputs from the smallest representation of visual field, and this might relate to the observation that X-cells are particularly concerned with fine spatial detail. The elongation of W-cell dendrites across projection lines suggests convergence of inputs from an extensive representation of visual space, a property consistent with the larger, more diffuse receptive fields of these neurons.
