Culicoides larvae were collected from samples of wet soil 3 in. in diam. and 2-3 in. deep, taken with a soil borer, each sample being divided into fractions 1 in. thick. Relationship between larvae and adults was established keeping wild caught larvae until adults emerged. A key is given to the larvae and pupae of 28 spp. of Culicoides found in Britain and to larvae and pupae of the genera Stilobezzia, Serromyia. and Ceratopogon including the subgenera Ceratopogon and Isohelea. The keys are supplemented by descriptions of the larvae and pupae, including photographs of the 4th instars and figures of the epipharynx of most of the larvae and by figures of specific characters of the pupae. An analysis made of the breeding preferences of Culicoides found that sp. could be placed in 1 of 6 groups depending on the larval habitat: bog, fresh water marsh, swamp, mud, salt water marsh and dung. Vertical distr. records for 7 spp. of Culicoides show marked differences between the spp. in this respect.
