A total of 1,472 masticatory tests were conducted on 16 denture wearers to study the influence of the following denture factors on their chewing efficiency: the food platform area, the contour of the buccal and lingual surfaces, and metal inserts and their exposed occlusal height. The presence of occlusal markings, whether in the form of grooves or inserts, on posterior teeth was found to increase significantly the ability of denture wearers to comminute raw carrots. The two types of occlusal markings, grooves and inserts, were shown to be equally effective in improving chewing performances. However, a reduction in the subocclusal surface of posterior teeth with metal inserts resulted in significant reduction of masticatory performance with peanuts. The anteroposterior dimension of the food platform was found to have no influence on masticatory performance. The denture wearers were able to chew raw carrots and peanuts with equal effectiveness regardless of whether the food platform area was equal to that of 2, 3, or 4 posterior teeth.
