The water relations of acai palm (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) were evaluated in mature plants growing in a typical tidal flooded ecosystem of the Amazon estuary, in order to assess the effects of the partial or total root system flooding, and others environmental factors, in the soil-plant-atmosphere water transfer process. Stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, relative water content and the leaflet relative water content at the turgor loss point, were measured hourly in the rainy and dry seasons, and correlated with the vapor pressure deficit in the atmosphere, solar radiation and tide height. The results show that this species has a low maximum conductance value (0.160 mol.m -2 .s -1 ) when compared to other palm species. The stomatal movements of this species are more closely linked to variations in the solar radiation than to the vapor pressure deficits. This species is well adapted to hypoxia prone environments and periodical flooding by tides does not affect the water uptake capacity of the roots. Also in the dry season (low tides season), the species maintains water absorption at levels sufficient to supply the transpiration demand. Additional index terms: acai palm, Amazon estuary, Euterpe oleracea, flooding, roots, stomatal conductance, tide, water relations.
