This study investigated an evaluation model for perforation failure of steel plates. Impact tests were conducted by using a 6.0 kg flat-nose projectile with a diameter of 50mm. The projectile collided with 6mm, 9mm and 12mm thick SS400 steel plates at impact velocities of 40-100m/s. Test results revealed that the perforation of the steel plates induced failure only at vicinity of impact point. Numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the deformation mechanism and perforation failure of the steel plates. Finite Difference Analysis simulated the experimental results. Based on the test and numerical results, an evaluation model was proposed by modeling plastic hinges and elongation behavior. Validation of the proposed model was discussed by comparing with test and numerical results.
