FIELD populations of common rats (Rattus norvegicus) resistant to anticoagulant rodenticides (for example, Warfarin) have appeared1in Scotland, Denmark, England and Wales, and more recently on the American continent. This resistance seems to be associated with a reduction in the efficiency of vitamin K metabolism1and is an inheritable factor controlled by a single dominant autosomal gene. Various theories have1,2been advanced to explain the underlying mechansim. Resistance to other anticoagulants has now appeared, that to coumatetralyl being the least effective1.
