Four lines ofCulicoides variipennis(Coquillett), 3 susceptible and 1 resistant to oral infection with bluetongue virus, were developed through a genetic selection program of selected matings from a parent colony (SONORA strain, 000 line) with an intermediate susceptibility rate of 30%. Three of these 4 lines had mean infection rates of 92, 63, and 2% for a single infective blood meal for their 13, 27, and 15 generations of colony maintenance; data from 2 repeated infective blood meals indicated that the 2 susceptible lines had susceptibility rates of 100% and that the resistant line was highly resistant. The data indicate that at least 2 genetic mechanisms governed susceptibility to oral infection with the virus: the 1st segregated rapidly and appeared to be single gene control with the dominant allele for resistance; a 2nd mechanism controlled the threshold of response. Our information suggests that an arbovirus disease might be controlled by lowering the vector capacity of a vector species without controlling the species itself.
