The interrelationship of myelomatosis, soli-tary myeloma of bone and extramedullary plas-macytoma is not well understood, and the prevalent idea is that they represent no more than a spectrum of variation of one tumor (6, 21, 27, 38). This idea has arisen partly through a lack of definition of terms and partly through a misconception of the degree of extramedullary involvement in myelomatosis (13, 25). The purpose of this paper is to clarify the position of extramedullary plasmacytoma in relation to other plasma-cell tumors. My own studies have shown that extramedullary plasmacytoma has characteristic features which distinguish it from myelomatosis, but that solitary myeloma of bone appears to be a rare mode of onset of myelomatosis.
