Chemnitz, known from 1953 until 1990 as Karl Marx Stadt, is located in the center of Saxony and is the district's administrative seat bearing the same name. The district encompasses the middle and western Erzgebirge (Ore Mountain) as well as the Vogtland. As of 1995, the city has a population of c. 271,000 within an area of approximately 12,871 hectares. Chemnitz is situated at the northern foot of the Erzgebirge, bordering on the south of the mid-European loessial soil belt. Chemnitz lies approximately 300-450 meters above sea level and extends to the eastern border of the Erzgebirge basin, from which ascends the Permian volcano, the Beutenberg (428 meters). Over the centuries the porphyritic rock from the former volcano has proven to be an excellent building material. During the city's territorial expansion in the 19th century an impressive" petrified forest" was discovered in Hilbersdorf just northeast of Chemnitz where silicified tree trunks were unearthed from the deep red loam dating back c. 290 million years. This unique configuration is clearly of museum quality. The paleobotanist Johann Traugott Sterzel (1841-1914) was the first to describe this geological wonder.
