The term “click loss” refers to loss of a click and replacement with a non-click sound.(cf. Traill and Vossen 1997). This article aims at providing an overview of this phenomenon by discussing existing literature on the subject in the context of recent advances in the study of the Khoe-Kwadi language family, including new and previously unpublished data from Kalahari Khoe and Kwadi. After an introduction to the research background (§ 1.1) and the data sources used (§ 1.2), a summary of Traill’s (1986a) and Traill and Vossen’s (1997) work on the phonetics of click loss will be presented and discussed (§ 2). § 3 is an assessment of what is most likely the best-known case of click loss in the literature, ie the loss of the alveolar (ǃ) and palatal (ǂ) influxes in Kalahari Khoe. § 4 provides additional data on lesser-known instances of click loss in Kwadi and the Khoekhoe variety Sesfontein Damara. § 5 concludes with a brief discussion of the sociolinguistic backdrop and makes a case for the treatment of click loss as a common process of sound change without obvious genealogical significance.
