Pharmacokinetics, the study of the time course of drugs and their metabolites in the body, has evolved from fundamental principles of chemical kinetics, physiology, and biochemistry. These principles have been brought together and further developed into what is now referred to as the discipline of pharmacokinetics. This discipline is a component of pharmacology; it borrows quantitative tools from chemical kinetics, but leans heavily on physiology and, to some degree, biochemistry to explain and predict the kinetic behavior of drugs and their metabolites in the body. The concepts that are basic to pharmacokinetics may be defined and classified differently, depending on one's point of view. In this presentation, emphasis is given to a physiologic rather than a chemical kinetic description and development of the basic concepts.
