In this chapter, we introduce some basic notions about elliptic curves, and collect various results that will be used throughout this book. We make no attempt to be complete in the presentation; rather we wish to expand upon the introduction to elliptic curves provided in Chapter 6 of Koblitz’s book [68]. Unless otherwise stated, proofs of these results can be found in the book by J. Silverman [140]. For an elementary introduction to elliptic curves, we recommend the notes by Charlap and Robbins [26], and also to the recent book by Silverman and Tate [141].
