Cynomolgus monkeys (Macacus irus) are susceptible to infection with influenza virus A strains if virus is administered in high conc, intratracheally. Amniotic and allantoic fluids from chick embryos inoculated by the amniotic route were used as inocula. With one strain ("W. S. Egg") a series of fatal infections was produced without evidence that any other pathogen than the virus was involved. The infection involves predominantly the epithelium of the smaller bronchioles, the epithelium of the nasal cavity and larger bronchi showing no histological evidence of damage. There is an active serological response both to primary symptomatic infections and to secondary symptomless reinfections. Two monkeys given repeated intratracheal inoculations of human strains developed high titre antibody against "Swine" influenza virus; in a limited series of immunization expts. the most significant feature was the correlation between antibody level and resistance to infection. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: F.
