Recent research on the replication of the DNA of bacteria and bacteriophages has been presented in a number of papers in this volume (Gellert et al.; Olivera et al.; Ganesan; Okazaki et al.; Sadowski et al.; Sinsheimer et al.; and Huberman), and these provide an introduction to the subject of this paper--the replication of DNA containing damaged bases:When cells are exposed to radiations and mutagenie agents, they suffer structural changes and damaged bases in their DNA. Many damaged bases may be removed by excision enzymes, so that the DNA can be repaired before it acts as template for replication. However, other damaged bases may remain in the DNA at the time it undergoes replication and affect its performance as template in DNA synthesis.
