Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to detect auditory 40 Hz components in responses to stimuli (optimized chirping sounds) regularly repeated at a rate of 40 times/s. The phase of the 40 Hz component was synchronized to a certain degree with the repeated chirps, giving rise to increased phase coherence. To quantify the synchronization and obtain information on its mechanism, we used a differential equation describing the dynamics of the phase. It was found that the obtained increase in coherence during stimuli could not be accounted for by evoked responses to the repeated chirps alone, even if it is in complete synchrony with the stimuli, indicating that the phase of the ongoing 40 Hz component was also synchronized to the stimuli to some degree.
