Ac electroluminescence (EL) from non-sulfide EL device made of BaTiO3–CaTiO3:Pr3+ diphase ceramics is investigated. A series of dielectric/phosphor/dielectric sandwich structures are formed spontaneously in the solid-state reaction process. The EL mechanism is discussed using the electric current density–electric field (J–E) relation. Above the threshold of electric field, the initial electrons emitted from the interface of Ba0.77Ca0.23TiO3:Pr dielectric and Ba0.1Ca0.9TiO3:Pr phosphor into the phosphor by the Schottky emission, are accelerated to impact and excite Pr3+. Then the EL is produced.
