During the past decade the attention of many investigators has been directed to the role of the Sertoli cell in the spermatogenic process. An impressive array of functions has been assigned to Sertoli cells (Fawcett, 1975; Dym, 1977a). These include: 1) secretion of fluid into the tubule lumen; 2) synthesis of proteins; 3) phagocytosis of degenerating germ cells and residual bodies; 4) a role in the sperm release phenomenon; 5) a role in the movement of germ cells from base to lumen; 6) metabolism of steroids; 7) the formation of the blood-testis barrier. Other data demonstrate that the Sertoli cell is the principal site of action for FSH in the testis. As a result of this abundant research activity on Sertoli cells, less attention has been devoted to germ cell differentiation. In this paper I will review recent observations on the fine structure of monkey germ cells and present some new data on the blood-testis barrier. In addition, a preliminary morphometric study of the seminiferous epithelium will be presented.
