Among isolates of Mucorales and pythiaceous fungi obtained from soil samples taken in February, 1970, from the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina was an apparently undescribed species of Mortierella. The fungus most closely resembles Mortierella spinosa Linnemann (1936, 1941), but differs from it by producing huge sporangiophores, much larger sporangia and globose sporangiospores. This fungus is considered new because of its morphologically distinctive sporangiophores and is given the specific epithet nantahalensis from its place of discovery.
