Complexes of glycosaminoglycans with various cationic thiazin, acridine, and triphenylmethane dyes give light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance spectra showing no hyperfine splitting. The intensity of the signal is not dependent on temperature over the range of —100 to 20°, and the decay of the radicals follows first-order kinetics. The wavelength of the light which induces the paramagnetic signal is that of the metachromatic band and this effect is dependent on the electron affinity of the dye. It is proposed that it is the interaction between the anionic site and the cationic dye that gives rise to the metachromatic spectral shift (hysochromic and hypochromic effect) and the photo-inducible free radicals, and that this inneraction is due to electron or charge transfer.
