Although a number of investigations have been carried out up to now on the morphological structures of the cell by light and electron microscopy, our knowledge of the mechanical properties of the cell is limited. This is because it is generally difficult to apply conventional methods for measuring mechanical properties of bodies of macroscopic dimensions to measure the properties of living cells of microscopic dimensions.
