Measured wave data covering 1 year in Sanmen Bay are studied, especially the large wave processes during typhoons. The wave characteristics during different typhoons are described, including wave height, wave period, and wave spectra. In addition, the influence of large waves caused by typhoons on moored vessels is discussed. The results reveal that the dominant wave direction in the study area is E, and 21.48% of the wave spectral peak periods are over 10 s. The wave spectra estimated during typhoons are mainly double-peaked with the swell peak frequency around 0.08 Hz in E direction, and the high-frequency wind seas without regard to direction are relatively weak. The multi-peaked spectra and single-peaked spectra are also observed. The wave spectral peak period during typhoons is close to the natural period of the moored vessels in the roll motion. Otherwise, the swells in E direction are at an acute angle of about 45° to the moored vessels, which may increase the amplitude in yaw motion.
