This paper discusses the classification of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) strains, worldwide distribution of HIV-1 variants, implications of HIV-1 variability on the development of diagnostic tests, antiretroviral drugs and HIV-1 vaccines, and implications of recombination of divergent strains. It is concluded that as more HIV-1 variants inevitably intermix in different parts of the world, the likelihood of generating new recombinant viruses will increase. The pattern of mosaicism will become even more complex since recombination involving viruses that are already recombinant will occur. Continued monitoring is necessary to determine the future role of non-subtype B viruses in North America and Europe, and to chart the emergence of new predominant subytpes and circulating recombinant forms around the world.
