The use of ascorbic acid for the determination of soluble phosphate in sea water has been developed. The sea water sample (40 ml) is treated with 8 ml of a mixed reagent, 2.5 [image] in sulfuric acid, 0.60% in ammonium molyb-date, and 0.03 [image] in ascorbic acid. The resultant solution is diluted to 50 ml. Its optical density is measured at 827 m[upsilon] after 24 hours, at room temperature, or after heating to 60[degree]C for 30 minutes. The color, once developed, is stable indefinitely. Beer''s Law is obeyed closely up to at least 500 [upsilon]g PO3 4 P/l. The salt error is approximately 4% with sea water of chlorinity 19.3%O. The interference caused by either arsenic or silicate at their normal concentrations in sea water is negligible.
