The variability that characterizes natural environments confronts orqanisms with numerous vital problems. To overcome these problems, organisms have evolved diverse ecological, behavioral, physiological, and genetic adaptations that comprise their adaptive strategies (Levins, 1968; see also Valentine, 1976). Probably the most important and all- encompassing environmental Variable that organisms face is seasonality, and thus one of the most basic and most unifying components of each species’ overall adaptive strategy is itsphenological strategy, i.e., the timing of the periods of its activity and dormancy in relation to annually cycling environmental factors — both biotic and abiotic. Thus, knowledge of the evolution of seasonal adaptations is a fundamental and unifying component in our understanding of the evolution of overall adaptive strategies of both plants and animals. This knowledge is obtained through comparative studies of phenology and environmental physiology.
