There is abundant evidence that in general multiple sclerosis is more prevalent in high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere than in low latitudes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Although the evidence is at present meager, a similar relationship may hold in the Southern Hemisphere (4). The meaning of this relationship has exercised many minds (5); race, climate, the distribution of trace elements, diet, and the availability of facilities for diagnosis have all been considered. The present paper demonstrates a high degree of correlation between the distribution of multiple sclerosis in U. S. veterans by birthplace, and latitude. An attempt is made to identify more meaningful variables correlated with latitude which may have a bearing on the etiology of the disease.
