The approach described here is based on our experience with aphasic patients referred to the Stichting Afasie Rotterdam (SAR, Rotterdam Aphasia Foundation). This organization is a cooperative effort of all nursing homes in the area and the department of Neuropsychology of the Institute of Neurology, Academic Hospital Rotterdam-Dijkzigt. Patients are investigated for their clinical complexity, for theoretical interest, but mostly to assess prognosis for therapy. The patients described here are among 267 patients with stroke-induced aphasia who were under the care of this Foundation during its first 5 years.
