As a prolific literary translator and professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, Karen Emmerich is perfectly situated to address literary translation and textual studies in practice and in theory. Her Literary Translation and the Making of Originals is a thought-provoking manifesto that successfully reveals the weaknesses in some of the traditional distinctions that are made between originals and translations by emphasizing the ways in which translations manifest originality and the ways in which “originals” are derivative works that are, in part, created by the translator who must establish “a particular text as the ‘prior’text to be translated”(13).
