The inorganic phosphate and phos-phocreatine in guinea pig brain were determined after Ca(OH)2-ethanol separation. Both phosphates and creatine were estimated. Inorganic phosphate and phosphates with the lability of phospho-creatine were determined without chemical separation. After death, a very rapid fall in phosphocreatine and rise in inorganic phosphate takes place in the brain of guinea pig as of other species. On slicing brain cortex and allowing the slices to respire with glucose under normal metabolic conditions, the inorganic phosphate falls and the phosphocreatine rises until the concns. approach those normal to the tissue in vivo. The concns. reached vary with the metabolic mixture.
