High-sensitivity assays for biomarkers are of paramount importance for many applications, including medical diagnostics, pharmaceutical development, forensics, and genomics and proteomics research.[1–18] Significant advances have been made in the area of DNA and protein detection, and several new technologies loom on the horizon. Some of the most promising are based upon novel probe materials, in particular gold nanoparticles, nanowires, and semiconductor quantum dot structures.[1, 2, 19–37]Although many of these technologies may initiate the move to novel forms of detection based upon colorimetric, electrical, electrochemical, or Raman-based signal transduction schemes, the dominant technology currently used by the diagnostics community relies on molecular fluorophore probes and fluorescence as a sensing modal-
