Ultra‐violet irradiation of the vegetal hemisphere of uncleavedR.pipienseggs results in the development of characteristic defects in neural morphogenesis. These defects can be prevented from occurring if U.V. irradiated embryos are either (1) incubated at low temperature (cryoreversion), (2) microinjected with oocyte homogenate, or (3) surgically manipulated by replacing their dorsal lip with the lip of a normal (non U.V. irradiated ) embryo at the time of gastrulation.
