Structural features of the transition zone between flat aggregates, limeston and silica glass, and portland cement paste were studied by means of electrical conductivity methods. A conductivity model was used to derive an experimentally obtainable parameter termed “interfacial excess conductance”. This descriptor yields new information about the structural characteristics and formation process of the transition zone. The experimental results indicate that the transition zone between non-porous aggregates and portland cement paste is always less dense than bulk paste. The feature of the transition zone are independent of the aggregates used. The formation of transition zone is essentially complete after 1 to 2 days of hydration.
