Bulrush millet (Pennisteum typhoides) is the staple diet of a large population in Africa and India. Feeding millet to rats produces histological changes in the thyroid glands of rats and distorts the thyroid hormones pattern. The superimposi‐tion of the areas where millet is cultivated and consumed in Africa and regions of high endemicity of goitre suggests that millet is a contributory factor to this endemicity.
