A review is given of Japanese whaling operations taking small whales with catcher boats of approximately 40 tons and mounting cannons of 50-mm bore and under. Main species caught are minke, Baird’s beaked, pilot, and killer whales. The catch of minke whales peaked at 532 in 1956, and has ranged between 220 and 365 annually since 1959. Decreases have been seen in catches of Baird’s, pilot, and killer whales. Catcher efficiency may have changed.
