For many years progress in plant-nematode research has lagged behind advances in fungal and bacterial phytopathology. The main reasons for this are the complexity of the plant-nematode interaction and the difficulties of working with these obligate root parasites. However, during the last two decades, plant nematology has caught up with other branches of phytopathology thanks to advanced molecular techniques that allow researchers to work with very small amounts of parasite or infected plant materials and also due to the fact that many groups have focused their research on the model plantArabidopsis thalianaas a host.Arabidopsishas provided researchers in this field with an ever-growing list of genetic and molecular tools, as well as conceptual frames for many physiological and developmental processes both at the genetic and genomic level. In this chapter we highlight some examples of how studies in nematology have benefited fromArabidopsisresearch, discuss cases which were not as successful as expected, summarize usefulness of other plant species and give our vision for the future prospects of this model in the field of molecular plant nematology.
