■ Making a serious effort to teach word attack skills to older students who lack them has not been in fashion in recent years. While the relevance of word attack skills to reading in the primary grades is widely accepted (Anderson et al., 1985), the prevailing view toward upgrading such skills in students past the middle grades seems to be that the effort is impractical at best and perhaps even pernicious. Accordingly, research journals rarely offer reports on the decoding skills of students in the 7th-12th grades, and journals on teaching reading probably contain more admonitions against teaching decoding to this group than recommendations for better ways to do it.
