Perioperative chemotherapy is increasing in use and importance, as is indicated by the very fact of this conference. Its use is designed to achieve cure in a larger number of patients than can be cured by surgery alone. Patients now receive chemotherapy or radiotherapy either before surgical resection, to improve the results of standard treatment or to increase the possibility of removal of large lesions, or following surgery, to remove any microscopic remnants of tumor following resection.
