Highlights∙Quaternary Ni–Fe–WS x were synthesized by a template conversion method.∙ The distinct morphologies can be adjusted by different reactant ratio.∙ Ni–Fe–WS x-2 had large surface area and high catalytic activity in DSSC.∙ The PCE of Ni–Fe–WS x-2 (9.86%) was markedly superior than that of Pt (8.20%).
