read the study by Cho et al. on the association between Helicobacter ( H . ) pylori infection and extragastric manifestations published in Allergy. 1 Helicobacter pylori infection is a well- recognized causative factor of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, and mucosa- associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, but the link of H. pylori infection with extragastric manifestations remains controversial. 2 The authors undertook a nationwide population- based study in Korea and demonstrated that H. pylori infection is inversely correlated with atopic, skin, and autoimmune diseases. 1 The inverse correlation with atopic disorders (allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis) and some autoimmune diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease) is consistent with previous reports showing protective activity of H. pylori infection. 2,3 However, we should be cautious in explaining the physiopathological implication of the inverse correlation observed between some skin diseases (contact dermatitis, rosacea, and urticaria) and autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and systemic lupus erythematosus).
