This is a progressreport on ongoing researchaimed at proposinga ‘reference’ morphosyntacticpart-of-speech tagsetfor theJapaneselanguage.Such a tagsetshouldbe linguistically motivated,explicit, broadlyapplicable,and computationallytractable. Being well defined,such a tagsetshould be easily adaptedin specificways(e.g. limited, extendedor modified). The author is currentlyattemptingto applythe Standar ds for tagsets(LeechandWilson 1999, originally proposedin EAGLES,1996) in designinga reference tagsetfor Japanese.
