A b s t r a c t . A new species of bat of the genus Plecotus from the Alps and other mountainous regions of Europe is described. Plecotus alpinus sp. nov. can be distinguished from other Plecotus species by its sequence of parts of the 16S and D-loop region of the mitochondrial DNA. Plecotus alpinus sp. nov. is genetically a close relative to Plecotus auritus, although in some morphological characters it shows a closer relation to Plecotus austriacus. Plecotus alpinus sp. nov. shares morphological similarities with P. auritus and P. austriacus, so in former studies it appeared as intermediate between P. auritus and P. austriacus. However, a combination of characteristic traits distinguishes P. alpinus sp. nov. clearly from its close related taxa.
