Abstract Plasma levels of norepinephrine and epinephrine provide an accurate assessment of the functional state of the sympathetic-adrenal medullary system. In laboratory rats, plasma levels of both catecholamines increase monotonically with increases in stressor intensity. In addition, plasma catecholamine responses are reduced in animals exposed repeatedly to the same stressor (habituation). In contrast, plasma catecholamine responses increase significantly when animals are exposed repeatedly to an intense stressor (sensitization). Finally, plasma catecholamine responses are increased markedly when previously stressed animals are exposed to a novel stressor (dishabituation). Nonassociative processes appear to underlie the adaptive responses of the sympathetic-adrenal medullary system in animals exposed to chronic intermittent stress.
