MW estimates were derived for the covalently-closed circular DNA extracted from 7 nuclear polyhedrosis and 3 granulosis viruses by a comparison of their contour length with that of the replicative form of f1 bacteriophage DNA. The length of the circular DNA molecules was uniform for each of the 10 viruses studied. The MW values obtained ranged from 58 .times. 106-94 .times. 106 although all but 2 values were within the range 69 .times. 106-81 .times. 106. There appeared to be 2 major size classes within the latter range. The MW of the 3 granulosis virus DNA were from 68 .times. 106-71 .times. 106 while the nuclear polyhedrosis virus DNA spanned the full range. Thus, the distribution of MW values obtained from covalently-closed DNA isolated from baculoviruses was not consistent with the division of the group into nuclear polyhedrosis and granulosis viruses.
