Simple acoustic finite elements are used for problems in low frequency sound transmission. The first part of the paper deals with the approximate formulation for the governing equations for the cases of (i) a single enclosure with a flexible boundary, and (ii) structural coupling between two enclosures allowing for direct and flanking sound. The effects of flexible boundaries on the normal modes and natural frequencies is considered. A numerical example is given for the case of sound transmission in cars. In this instance the normal modes and frequencies for the complete coupled system are computed. These can be used for calculating the pressure response in the passenger spzce to either an acceleration source in the engine enclosure or a force acting on the boundaries.
