Three mechanisms were found suitable to describe the hydrogenation of benzene on a nickel-silica catalyst: (i) a mechanism with a rate determining step, the following hydrogen addition steps being faster; (ii) a mechanism based on the assumption that all hydrogen addition steps have the same rate constant; and (iii) a mechanism with a set of slow steps after an adjustable number of fast addition steps. With a least squares nonlinear computer fit program values of parameters for the rate equations were calculated. These values are discussed. The second mechanism appeared to be the most suitable to describe the hydrogenation of benzene.
