Examined whether membership in a minority culture is associated with underuse of physicians among 355 White, 201 Asian, 31 Black, 12 Native American, 10 Hispanic, and 15" Other" older persons (aged 65+ yrs) at high risk for hospital admission. Ss completed a questionnaire regarding 9 factors: age, sex, self-rated health, hospital admissions and physician visits in the previous year, and the presence of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, and forgetfulness. Asian race was a highly significant predictor of infrequent visits to physicians. The authors argue that findings probably reflect the importance of culture (shared beliefs, values, and habits) more than the effect of race. However, results support the assertion that health care is unequal across cultural groups, perhaps interfering with the timely treatment of deteriorating medical conditions.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
