An inverse relationship between the number of solid tumor cells and the chemotherapeutic response (i.e., the less the amount of tumor tissue, the greater the chemotherapeutic effect) is documented. The recorded studies are on the 755 mouse breast carcinoma, with surgery and 6-mercaptopurine employed as tools. The data are discussed with regard to their general applicability and to the potential value of combining surgery and chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer patients.
